community information. It also covers particular faiths - Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Islam. We celebrate the various religious days including Christmas, Easter, Navratri, Holi, Ramadhan, all the Guru holy days, Nigar Kirten, Diwali and Milad Nabi.
Awaz FM is a Community Radio Station setup as part of a year long license in 2001 and on August 7th 2001, we were invited by the Radio Authority (Ofcom) to apply for the PILOT License Scheme. On April 15th 2002 we started our technical tests and went live on Air Monday 29th April 2002 for one full year.
Awaz FM works with many organisations including Glasgow City Council, Greater Glasgow Health Board, Community Planning Partnership, Strathclyde Police, Fire Brigade, Scottish Goverment, Cemvo, Gara and West of Scotland Racial Equality Council in delivering their services tot he Asian and African Community.
Awaz FM also enables many community organisations and individuals to use the station as a platform to highlight their work and services.
Awaz FM is the only media platform where information and services can be delivered in a multilingual format.
History of Awaz FM:
Founded in 1996 by Javed Sattar
First came On-Air in September 15th 1997
Radio Awaz joined forces with Bubble FM and Radio Sangeet in 2001 to become Awaz FM
Awaz FM in 2002 awarded Pilot Licence and started test transmission in April 15th 2002
Live On-Air on April 29th 2002 - Javaid Ullah was the breakfast presenter waking up Glasgow to the majical sounds of Awaz FM
Awaz FM achieved its fulltime 5 year licence from Ofcom in January 2005
Awaz FM is also committed to giving something back to Glasgow and every year it raises money for local charities. In the past we have rasided money for Yorkhill Hospital, MacMillan Cancer, Apna Service Barnados. Some of the team have climbed Kilimanjaro and treked Great Wall of China. Awaz FM serves the Asian and African community in Glasgow, delivering entertainment, community information, local, national and international news broadcasting in Urdu, Punjabi, Hindi, Swahili and English.
“Awaz” translates as “voice” in Urdu and Hindi languages.
Awaz FM is the voice of Glasgow’s BME communities and their respective faiths. A voice to let the people of Glasgow express their needs and desires. It provides organisations an opportunity to use Awaz FM as a platform to deliver their aims and objectives.
Awaz FM has established itself as the only media platform since 1997 to be serving the BME Community of Glasgow.
