Student radio at Carleton College began in 1948 when KARL 680AM began broadcasting over carrier current lines with a WWII Navy surplus transmitter. In 1974 ... See more Carleton received one of the new Class “D” 10 watt FM licenses the FCC was giving out, and KRLX 90.3FM went on the air. The AM station was turned into a training ground (and in later years, overflow) for the FM station. In 1983 the FCC granted the station a 100-watt, Class “A” non-commercial license and KRLX 90.3FM became KRLX 88.1FM. In Carleton radio’s 60+ year history, it has grown from a simple closed circuit, daylight-only AM station to a 24 hour 100 watt FM broadcast available worldwide via live streaming at KRLX.org. Today we have over 200 DJs, producers, journalists and miscellaneous staff members. The station is non-commercial, independent and format-free. Our goal is to provide all of our potential listeners with the best radio programming available. KRLX is governed by a Board of Directors that works with, and for, the staff to ensure that we always meet that goal. The Board is broken down into departments that oversee specific aspects of the station. You can read about the current members and what their departments do below.
